USS Midway Museum
San Diego, CA is internationally known for its long history of naval and aviation importance. An excellent place to learn this history is at the USS Midway Museum.
The USS Midway was opened as a museum in 2004 and has since become one of the top attractions in the San Diego. The USS Midway has many historic events in its past. It served the longest term for aircraft carriers in the 20th century and was the only American aircraft carrier that served for the complete length of the Cold War. The USS Midway completed numerous humanitarian missions and is known for breakthroughs in naval aviation history. Since the aircraft carrier has become a museum, it has been used for several television broadcasting shows, private events, and hosted a NCAA basketball game.
When visiting the USS Midway, your whole family will be transported into the life of an aircraft carrier sailor. There are numerous restored aircraft and over sixty exhibits that visitors may tour in a self-guided fashion. This audio tour is available in six different languages and is narrated by sailors who have served on the USS Midway. On this tour, you can explore the engine room, the ship’s galley, sleeping quarters of both officers and enlisted men, the pilots “ready room” the flight control area, and the carrier’s post office,. The USS Midway is literally a city on the sea. Several of the restored aircraft offer the ability to climb aboard for up-close exploration of the cockpits. There are of videos for both young and old, and plenty of hands-on activities for children. There are also two flight simulators for daring guests to try out. The museum is a wonderful host for school field trips and has an annual overnight program for children.
The USS Midway Museum is daily from 10am to 5pm, closing only on Christmas Day and Thanksgiving. There is an admission and parking charge. It is in walking distance of other waterfront attractions and public transportation. The USS Midway is located at the Navy Pier. San Diego Maritime Museum
The San Diego Maritime Museum houses some of the oldest maritime vessels in history.
This museum is home to nine maritime exhibits, six historic vessels and two submarines. Four of the ships are available for onboard tours, while two of them are used for a unique sailing experience. The San Diego Maritime Museum is open daily from 9am to 8pm. During the summer months, they are open until 9pm. There is an admission fee and a parking fee.
Port of San Diego Parks
There are numerous parks in the San Diego Bay area that offer a variety of outdoor setting s for you and your family to enjoy. All of the parks have beautifully maintained landscapes and pathways for walkers, bicyclists, skaters and joggers to enjoy. There are plenty of amenities in each one. There are fishing piers in a select few of the parks, and some of them are dog friendly. Stunning facilities are available to host your wedding, family reunion, or business events. Seaport Village
Located in the beautiful Bay area is Seaport Village. Here you’ll find something for the entire family. There’s outdoor entertainment, a variety of restaurants and eateries, and over fifty unique shops. When you visit Seaport Village, you’ll be treated to such lovely sights such as fountains, ponds, lush landscaping, and a fun ride on an antique carousel. There is an adjacent park for sunny day picnicking. Seaport Village also offers traditional events, such as free ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s. Beauty by the Bay
You can take in many of the attractions plus much more when you enjoy the walkway that is adjacent to the Bay. Many of the main attractions are close to each other, giving you the opportunity to see several in a day. They also have walking tours that range from one mile to ten miles. Horse-drawn carriage rides are also available.
